Note: that this year we have moved to March and are back-to-back with the säckpipa weekend. We will be sharing the manor with Jonny running Scandinavian Accordion Tunes. We will be in the main house, us in the Long Room with Jonny in the bar. In the Brendan room will be Emanuel running his melodeon building course.
This course is designed as the next progression. Learners who have worked their way through beginners, intermediate and are looking for something more advanced to get their teeth into. There will be a big emphasis on technique, exercises, studies and less on straight tune learning. There will also be general musicianship in the form of Eurythmics style musicianship and other musical games aimed at increasing skill and flexibility.
The class will be differentiated so it will be tailored to the fresh out of advanced to the more long term player. This course is slightly longer than the weekends and will include some time for 1-to-1 learning and maybe even a quick trip up to the top of the Quantocks.
The Nyckelharpa is entering an exciting time in the UK thanks to the enthusiasm of player and teacher Vicki Swan. This is a full-on, fun packed workshop week for advanced intermediate and advanced players.
Arrive from 4pm Monday. Depart after breakfast on Friday morning.
Vicki graduated from the Royal College of Music on double bass, specialising in performance. Well known on the British folk scene she is a full time folk musician performing on nyckelharpa, bagpipes and singing. Being half Swedish the nyckelharpa was a natural choice to add to her armory of instruments and is now leading the development of the nyckelharpa in Great Britain with the UK Nyckelharpa Project and spearheaded the newly formed UK Nyckelharpa Society. In addition to various duo recordings Vicki has recently published the ‘British Session Tunes for Nyckelharpa’, a book of Duets in the Swedish Style and Scandinavian Fiddle Tunes published by Schott. Vicki is a qualified teacher, specialising in instrumental teaching and has a masters in Education (specialising in distance tuition on the Scottish smallpipes) and composes and arranges music for the nyckelharpa and other ensembles. She was a member of the ENCORE (European Nyckelharpa Co-operation - Orchestral Experience, 2013) and a tutor on the International Nyckelharpa Days in Germany in 2014 and 2015.
