This weekend is aimed at complete beginners and the less confident. The group will be split into two levels.
We are extremely excited this year to have the wonderful Kirsty Money coming all the way from Canada as the second tutor on the March course. Kirsty is a driving force for the nyckelharpa in Canada having studied under most of the great nyckelharpa players in Sweden. An experienced instrumental teacher, Kirsty will bring a whole new level of instruction on the course.
There are now only beds left in the shared rooms, but there are B&Bs in the area for people wanting to come on the weekend. Get in touch!
All the spaces with a nyckelharpa provided are now filled - there is a waiting list and a good chance that a couple more instruments should be procured - so get your name down on the waiting list and fingers crossed there will be a space!
The Nyckelharpa is entering an exciting time in the UK thanks to the enthusiasm of player and teacher Vicki Swan. This is a full-on, fun packed workshop weekend for beginners as well as more experienced players of this unusual Swedish folk stringed instrument. Arrive from 4pm Friday. Finishes 5pm Sunday. There is the possibility of staying over until the Monday morning (for a supplementary fee).
Workshops will cover all aspects of playing the nyckelharpa:
posture • technique • bowing • Swedish tunes • British tunes • chord playing
ensemble playing (by ear) • exercises • Nyckeleurythmics
To make the most of the weekend it's advisable to have some lessons or go to a workshop.
Get in touch for details.
Vicki graduated from the Royal College of Music on double bass, specialising in performance. Well known on the British folk scene she is a full time folk musician performing on nyckelharpa, bagpipes and singing. Being half Swedish the nyckelharpa was a natural choice to add to her armory of instruments and is now leading the development of the nyckelharpa in Great Britain with the UK Nyckelharpa Project and spearheaded the newly formed UK Nyckelharpa Society. In addition to various duo recordings Vicki has recently published the ‘British Session Tunes for Nyckelharpa’, a book of Duets in the Swedish Style and Scandinavian Fiddle Tunes published by Schott. Vicki is a qualified teacher, specialising in instrumental teaching and has a masters in Education (specialising in distance tuition on the Scottish smallpipes) and composes and arranges music for the nyckelharpa and other ensembles. She was a member of the ENCORE (European Nyckelharpa Co-operation - Orchestral Experience, 2013) and a tutor on the International Nyckelharpa Days in Germany in 2014 and 2015.
Kirsty Money (Halifax, NS, Canada) is a multi-instrumentalist that plays modern and baroque violin/viola and the nyckelharpa. She enjoys playing many different styles of music (Classical, Trad. Jazz, Pop, Contemporary, Flamenco) and has played professionally in Canada, the United States and Europe. She is currently a member of Symphony Nova Scotia, and is known for her musical versatility in the Canadian music scene.
Her principal mentors of the nyckelharpa include Swedish players Olov Johansson , Magnus Holmström, Josefina Paulson, and of course Vicki Swan (UK). Although little is known of the nyckelharpa in Canada, Kirsty is starting to be an ambassador for the instrument, and has given several concerts, radio interviews, and education workshops in Maritime Canada, Québec, and Victoria, BC. One of Kirsty’s principal goals in playing and teaching the nyckelharpa is to educate people about the extraordinary sonic possibilities, repertoire and historical intrigue this instrument has to offer.
She is excited to collaborate with Vicki Swan at Halsway this year, and will share her passion and knowledge with the participants, providing a solid foundation from which to start learning the nyckelharpa.
