Nyckelharpa Course at Halsway Manor
Friday 9th - Sunday 11th March 2018 - Year Seven
Aimed at beginners the beginners class is now fully booked. The course has been opened up for the less confident and intermediates. These final spaces are filling up fast though - so if you have your own instrument get in touch to book your space now! Vicki will be supported again by Ella Sprung.
Nyckelharpas will be available for use (now fully booked up) and some will be for sale after the weekend.
The Nyckelharpa is entering an exciting time in the UK thanks to the enthusiasm of player and teacher Vicki Swan. This is a full-on, fun packed workshop weekend for beginners as well as more experienced players of this unusual Swedish folk stringed instrument. Arrive from 4pm Friday. Finishes 5pm Sunday. There is the possibility of staying over until the Monday morning (for a supplementary fee).
Workshops will cover all aspects of playing the nyckelharpa:
posture • technique • bowing • Swedish tunes • British tunes • chord playing
ensemble playing (by ear) • exercises
Complete beginners needing instruments is now full. If you have your own instrument, even if you consider yourself a beginner there are spaces left. To make the most of the weekend it's advisable to have some lessons or go to a workshop. Get in touch for details.
Vicki graduated from the Royal College of Music on double bass, specialising in performance. Well known on the British folk scene she is a full time folk musician performing on nyckelharpa, bagpipes and singing. Being half Swedish the nyckelharpa was a natural choice to add to her armory of instruments and is now leading the development of the nyckelharpa in Great Britain with the UK Nyckelharpa Project and spearheaded the newly formed UK Nyckelharpa Society. In addition to various duo recordings Vicki has recently published the ‘British Session Tunes for Nyckelharpa’, a book of Duets in the Swedish Style and Scandinavian Fiddle Tunes published by Schott. Vicki is a qualified teacher, specialising in instrumental teaching and has a masters in Education (specialising in distance tuition on the Scottish smallpipes) and composes and arranges music for the nyckelharpa and other ensembles. She was a member of the ENCORE (European Nyckelharpa Co-operation - Orchestral Experience, 2013) and a tutor on the International Nyckelharpa Days in Germany in 2014 and 2015.
Ella plays the Swedish Nyckelharpa and the fiddle, and is a singer and dancer. She specialises in French, Breton, and Scandinavian folk music, and performs with European folk dance band Trip the Light and folk groups Gallivant, Bright Season and Jack’s Rake.
